Continuity Exercise

As a first media product and a continuity exercise the final product turned out very well, one of the main criticisms would have to be the fact that the audio levels between the music at the start and the dialogue within the video don't match up, therefore it breaks the continuity of the video and gives it a slightly amateur feel.

The edits between 0:16 to 0:24 within the video are very smooth and don't break the continuity of the product at all.  I really like the match on action cut my group used from the shot where the character is walking from the outside to indoors, he then draws his gun and makes sure it is loaded; the cut from the medium shot of him checking the gun, to the close up of him continuing to check the gun and then opening the door is very smooth you almost forget its there.  Also one of my favourite shots in our product can be seen in the still image above on the left, I think this particular shot matched with the action looks very effective.

Another criticism of our work is the cut between the two shots at 0:24 to 0:25, between these two shots the character seems to jump across the room slightly.  In one shot (seen in the still on the right) the character is standing to the left of the desk and the chart on the wall, then when it cuts to the shot after (this can be seen in the image below on the left) that the character has somehow moved so that he is now standing in front of the white board but because of the camera angle it looks like it is to his left; this breaks the continuity and leaves the audience having to guess where the character is now placed within the room.

The other main issue with our product is the audio between 0:31 to 0:40, the dialogue is far to quiet and you have to turn it up a bit just to be able to make it out.  The other issue with this part of our product is when you compare the audio level of the dialogue to the level of the music at the start, there is a clear difference between the two and this breaks the continuity of the piece and as I already stated above, gives it a slightly amateur feel.

Apart from the two main issues with continuity the overall product and the short story our group has told is good and is a nice start.  I especially like the shot of the shaking hand in the foreground with the character walking out through the door in the background between 0:40 to 0:44, I find it very effective and shows how much fear the other character has.  I think our group did very well, I feel overall we succeeded in this continuity exercise; we also had a lot of nice shots and camera work within this short piece of video and I feel it is a very good start to the rest of the year ahead on this course.

  1. Good work Ryan, and really well presented. However I'd like to see quite a bit more use of (and discussion of examples of) the technical terms we have been exploring - establishing shots, eyeline matches, match cuts on action, 180 degree rule, synchronous sound, diagesis etc. You know the stuff but be sure to demostrate that knowledge clearly.
